HOME IN A HOT POT

Role:

Concept     Design         Animation

Hot pot resembling family dynamics: the good...and the playful chaos

Tools:

Deliverable:

Adobe Photoshop, After Effects, Dragon Frame, Cinema 4D, Tactile (Paint, Paper, Ink)

1-2 minute animation

Problem

How do I represent the process of cooking hot pot without being too anthropomorphic, how would I still gauge the audience? These are the questions constantly in mind when establishing the simple yet complex story through food elements.

Design Iterations

Through consistent changes from going completely digital in design, finally landed on mixing mediums but still having set of rules where some elements can be photo and hand painted, but all tools must be rendered from 3D.

These apply to the backgrounds too, to distinguish whether we are in broth or outside.

Behind the Scenes

Trial and errors through and through, from painting backgrounds to animating stop motion strings to replicate noodles.

Solution

Take Aways

By solidifying the design to harmonize and balance between digital and tactile craft, it was successful to still bring the sense of home and comfort through this piece. We want to make the animation yummy!

I think by more experimentation in styles, especially going with a more painterly or mix media, in the beginning could have helped fasten the production and post down the line.

Post Project

Continuing to reflect on what can be improved from the project, I decided to do mock organization (schedule, assets, etc) as if I were a producer for the project using Flow Production Tracking.
